Ideally you do not need to spend a coin or currency on animals and especially on item decorations until level 5 has been reached.
Also, you must have an area that is plowable and you will want to get more and more of it.
I know one of my neighbors that was struggling for coins because he was plowing with only the 6 blocks initially provide by Farmville.
Then I suggested to him to add more areas that he could plow. Now he is really moving forward and doing a lot better.
Remember, the more you plow, the more coins and XP you will receive!
